INTRODUCTION

WHO IS THIS?
Welcome! I'm Tristan(he/him).

I like a lot of things: reading, drawing, painting, taking pictures, cool museums, bike-riding, walking about places I've not been before, and moving every six months apparently. I also do some fandom things! Joseimuke stuff and old fashioned drama and action shoujo manga are my favourites. Sometimes I play a video game or two. I do a decent amount of roleplaying, on dreamwidth and in tabletop format! I used to do it in MMOs sometimes too.

No ships are listed because I'm a big multishipper! I have favorites, of course, but the list is simply too long. The fandom list is long enough...

I can also be found on Ao3, by the name heartdyed.

Across the Finish Line

◇ All done with my finals, portfolio turned in, project proposal submitted! Finally, summer has arrived!

◇ ...sort of, it's been rainy, chilly, and windy for the last week but that's the Netherlands for you.

◇ Let's see, what else... I wrote a fishing mini-game downtime action for Songbirds 3e. There's a tackle and bait box in the shop for 30 coins but no fishing mechanics, so I did what needed to be done.

MIDWAY THROUGH FINALS, AND YET I LIVE

◇ Done with 3 out of 4 finals! Which you would think means I'm MOSTLY DONE.

Unfortunately, I also have a group research project proposal due Monday for an honours course for summer. And my portfolio is due on June 6th and I need to write... 6k more words and do about 20 more drawings. My wrist is in agony just thinking about it. But I will do my best! Half-way there!

But this is why I've been totally gone, haha. The last month or so has been solid projects and presentations and studying for finals. I feel exhausted but I cannot fall before the finish line.

◇ My laptop's been crashing lately and I've been too busy to really investigate as to why. It might just be mad because the thousand or so firefox tabs I've got open, which. I guess is really the start of my summer to-do list, start going through and sorting through stuff. Most of it is stuff like fic to read, fashion collections I wanted to look at, videos to watch for later, etc but I've not had time to that so as a result: this!

◇ Two letters arrived this week! I sent some postcards out to friends in America, and got one back with a really nice tarot card (The Strength) sticker enclosed, a note on cute stationary, and and a little patch to sew to one of my coats. I have a bunch of post-cards because I like visiting museums, so I'm going to send one back, but I'm wondering if I should scout about the city's second-hand stores for something of similar cool-factor and care to send back.

The other is because I've been playing thin black gulf via post with another friend. It's nice to have a reason to use my dip pen and it's really fun to construct the letters. [personal profile] ivoryandhorn mentioned she typed up her letter first before committing it to pen and paper, so we'd have a record to look back upon uncensored at the end of our game and that's a good idea. I think because the difference in the size of handwriting vs text, I'm going to handwrite out my part and then type it up, but I think having a record of what I've previously written is a good idea.

That said, I haven't read the letter yet because I'm trying not to be distracted from school stuff. I'm saving it for when I'm done with my work as a treat.

◇ Though of course it's when I can't do fun stuff that I have ideas for things to write. I won't say they're good ideas, but they're ideas!
◇This first one... well, maybe it doesn't require context, but it's easier to explain the idea properly by contextualising it with its inspiration. So! Oulipo was a french collective of writers/mathematicians who decided to try and see what happened when you constrained creativity by working within very specific forms. Italo Calvino's Invisible Cities is a work that comes out of this movement, and it's very cool.

Another famous Oulipian work is Raymond Queneau's Exercices de style which is the same short story written 99 times, but each time though the events are the same it's reframed through a different lens-- genre lens, tone, only through visual description, script format, etc. And while I have no desire to write the same thing 99 times...

I think it'd be fun to have a list of different "lenses" and then enstars stories and try and rewrite the stories through different lenses! You can't change events, but other than that anything else is fair game. I think it'd maybe be fun to do with other people, but tbh I don't know who else would be interested. I just think the changes made in adaption and how things are adapted is inherently interesting, and I want to see how much you can make a different thing from the same script. I'm one of those people who really likes weird staging of Shakespeare plays, so this is just how I am.

◇ In... an unexpected rarity, I got a comment over on ao3 saying they wanted to see more of a one-shot fic. A fic I did actually have an idea for follow-up. The problem is, I don't think the "sequel" is necessarily much like the original? But my taste in classic shoujo manga is like, you know. Kaze to Ki no Uta. A Cruel God Reigns. Of course I'd be happy to write more if there's an audience for it.

I just also think my work isn't really written for an audience and being aware of like, oh!! Maybe someone likes my work!! Paradoxically makes me like hm well that can't be right, if I write more they will simply come to realise that it is not their thing at all.

C'mon my guy, don't be like that. Kind comments should be motivators, not demotivators. So maybe I will try and push back against that feeling and write the sequel. And if it turns out to not be the commenter's thing, that's still fine bc it's an idea I wanted to write anyway!

◇ Enstars/minecraft death game mash-up. this one is haunting me. I have no excuse it just is.

◇ Katabasis, or A Smile as Wide as the Road to Hell. I don't think I've talked about this one here before, but it's an old project. tl;dr: In a world where the entertainment industry is run by the literal underworld, Mashiro Tomoya goes to seek his fortune.

To expand slightly more about the setting: Japan's film capital is in the underworld. Old stars and starlets live forever on film because they're already dead. There's a mystique about dying young and living forever but also an obvious taboo against the living going there, living people who go there need their food brought in by train from the overworld bc if you eat of the land of the dead you are trapped there as one of the dead, etc.

Cast:

◇ Mashiro Tomoya: a young aspiring actor. Cast as the heroine against his will, he gets everything he ever wanted. He protests he regrets it, but not enough to leave.
◇ Shino Hajime: a childhood friend and roommate. Pay is decent for people in the underworld willing to do work, as the dead don't need money to eat or live, and Hajime needs decent pay more than he needs anything else from living.
◇ Tenma Mitsuru: a childhood friend. Seen in flashbacks, but not present tense.
◇ Nito Nazuna: got Tomoya the audition. Was supposed to be the heroine, but declined. Formerly a close collaborator with Itsuki Shu. He is relieved, guilty, and annoyed by the recent turn of events.
◇ Itsuki Shu: An auteur and dead man. After being killed by Tenshouin Eichi, he has sealed himself up in a cave and screams that he's dead, go away at anyone who attempts to make him make movies again.
◇ Kagehira Mika: A former protege of Itsuki Shu. Determined to finish Shu's last film, his magnum opus, for him in hopes it will draw him out of his cave and make him live again. A wreck of a human being.
◇ Tenshouin Eichi: Owns this town, and the Yumenosaki Studio. A devil. Possibly in more than one sense. Producer on many a Hibiki picture.
◇ Hibiki Wataru: A black and white starlet, way back when. Been in this business ages. On Kagehira's current picture as a favour to the deceased. Currently in love with Tenshouin Eichi, and with harrassing Mashiro Tomoya.

Enstars Tenth Anniversary (My edgelord ass is sad)

& I have uninstalled the app from my phone. I still love the first(!) and second(!!) games, though they're both different from each other they each have their own unique charms. That said, I don't really have confidence in the direction the game is going in now, so I'm saying goodbye to the game itself and I'll continue to like the past stories.

While it's funny to joke about with friends that wow, you have to really mess up a UI update to have players uninstall over it. . . It's more like the change is emblematic of changes that have been happening for a while now and kind of solidifies that this is the direction the company is choosing to go forward in the future.

The pastel bright UI very much matches the character of Nice-- who, as a character, is much less problematic than our beloved dying bastard, Tenshouin Eichi. Hasn't ever done a colonialism or pushed his classmates to committing suicide or anything. It's very clean and friendly— and we see this change in not just like, Nice as a driving force forward but also in some of the units. With Switch, for instance, Aoba's design has been reworked to be much more generic ikemen, Sora's psychic abilities are gone. The game seems like it's attempting to cater to a more mainstream audience. And yes, the mahou shonen transformations and megasphere are weird but it's more weird zany-cutesy than the typical enstars holy shit there's a cannibal cult in this idol game.

Enstars has always had elements of humour and off-the-wall world building, but it used its bizarre and absurd setting to tell stories of imperfect people and their connections to each other— hurting each other, helping each other, and finding purpose and getting by in a world that sees them as valuable commodities. The very first enstars story has Eichi talk about his dreams of mass producing idols, after all. As much as weird is integral to enstars, so is the hard edge it has on it. It's always been a game with something to say. People might criticise Akira not handling all of the topics super well, I think it's also noteworthy that Akira... didn't have to bring up any of that. Especially in a Japanese game, where people are frequently just not taught much of anything about like, imperialism in schools where their textbooks are censored, for instance. And considering some of his writing did get censored after the fact. . . I don't know, I think he included that stuff because he cares and has stories he wants to tell— and so that it's getting boiled down to lol so random lol is unpleasant.

And with Akira's last message, at the end of the !! climax series did read very much as a good-bye, plus writers names no longer being visible during a spate of stories of questionable quality, I do highly suspect he has stepped down from the writing team. Which is fair! He wrote this game for nine years, and wrote an insane volume of work. So much.

But the story was ultimately what I'm here for.

And the new UI doesn't even display story on the main interface. Add to that the addition of new predatory gacha bullshit (roll for colors of each part of each outfit), and just like. You misunderstood what people are here for. This did not get big as the cute boys do cute things series. If it was that, pripara or b-project or something would be big. And doing this to enstars is just yeah, no thanks. If it gets better, maybe I'll come back! But for now, I'm done playing. I'm satisfied with what I have.

LOOK

Lean. Impatient. Hair & the right iris has a blue stripe.

SOLVENT TORR
PERFECTIONIST, IMPATIENT, PAPER TRAIL SHREDDER

BACKGROUND
Beam Saber: Sovereign Waltz is a homebrew setting for a mecha pilot game. Under this setting, five grand sovereign powers— The Morningstar Calyx, The Kingdom of the Aster Eternal, The Disciples of the Tritonic Church, the Anolyte Union, and the Terrestrial Industries Federated— each have staked out their own portion of space and have a contentious relationship: rivalries over resources, deep philosophical divides, and an abiding skepticism of the other powers' goals. These rifts sometimes erupt into violence.

With the Disciples of the Tritonic Church— any of the sovereign powers, really, but them in particular— it is good to know that actions against them do have some good grounds. Founded when a scientific colony on a deep-sea planet began to fall to a mysterious malediction that none of their research could find the cause of, much less the cure, the child of one of the scientists became the first Prophet by jettisoning their body into the cold abyss and emerging whole, but changed. This tradition continues to this day and is core to the Tritonic Church-- a ritual where at the age of 13 you leave your human life behind, where you are drowned in the cockpit of a Tritonic Church mech filled with void water. The Transcended don't need to breathe air and can survive in the void, be it space or in the depths of the sea. They also remember none of their lives before they Transcended, though they still retain procedural memories and knowledge. They will not remember who their best friend was, but they will remember how to shoot a bow and arrow, for instance.

Those who transcend re-emerge from their cockpits with a title, bestowed upon them by the process itself. They know it innately, and the role it gives them. For Solvent Torr, this meant the task to dissolve things no longer necessary to the colony: to make sure files detailing old operations don't make it out into wider circulation, and are destroyed. He scrubs through information and see to it that it is made gone.

His feelings on it? Solvent finds it a bit unfortunate to have been tasked with the manual making of void. It is all very well to wait and know of the ultimate task, but in the meanwhile there is minute granualar erasals that must be made. It is trying, it is messy, it is unpleasant. It especially unpleasant because it feels so hopeless in the grand scheme of things. He has done so much work, and yet there is so much left to do.

Also because this is a mech game, he also pilots a robot. Though Solvent doesn't remember childhood, growing up on the deep water colony of Torr, children are taught diving so they can leave their raising pods— and so envy roots within them at the adults that can move so freely amongst the depths. Solvent is thus fairly skilled at submersible mech operation.

ABILITIES
Red Tape: When you can quote a regulation that would prevent a Consequence, you may roll Resolve to resist instead of any other Pilot or Vehicle Attribute.
EDITORIAL
The setting for this is homebrew and can be viewed here. There's a lot of sheets I have-- charts for name generation, tragedies, etc. I've run this setting a few times, and it's a lot of fun! But because I'm the GM I never end up making my own characters, so I wanted to. I skipped making a mech for Torr though, because I find that less fun.

Gamer Boy Gets Good - A Yuuki Makoto FST

So, a friend ([personal profile] spaceconfessional) came to me, remembering that I had been interesting in making a fanmix comm on dreamwidth, and together we got the [community profile] fst comm ready. Please join, if you're interested. :D It'd be super cool to see people using it and sharing music playlists!

And now since it exists, I have an FST to cross-post there. I'm really proud of this one, I think the flow works really well for the character.

Life Continues

◇ Luck of the Draw voted and we decided to read (or re-read, in my case) Yumekui Kenbun: Nightmare Inspector! We're doing our discussion on the 12th but I've finished my reread so I'm a bit vibrating with [WANT TO TALK ABOUT IT NOW THO,]

Once we've done our little group discussion I think I'll do a manga review post. I'm not sure I'd rec it, but I do have a lot to say about it and it'll be easier to organise my thoughts once I've talked it through with others and maybe more perspectives will help me figure out how I want to post. I will say though, unilaterally, that the page layouts in it are great. Clover and Yumekui Kenbun are like, two of my top picks for paneling alone.

◇ Despite the housing shortage and how difficult it was to find a place... there appears to be only three people living on my floor in the dorms. So the three of us decided to do a roommate dinner since it's a bit lonely! I saw a glass kettle at a thrift store, going for 2 euro so I bought that, because I have some flowering teas I got for my birthday back in July that I haven't used since... well. It's a bit silly to use something like that where the point is how pretty it is without something nice to see it in, and the price was right. So they made Korean food (and warned me it was spicy, laughs, and I assured them that's not a problem) and I made fancy tea and pan-fried herring.

Next time I'll make them proper Californian food though! Fish or shrimp tacos I think. I'll have to talk to Issac about where to find some stuff, though.

◇ First honours class happened! Soft Power in Morocco. I need to buy plane tickets for the summer trip, but I'm meeting with the academic counselor on Monday to talk finances first. Still, I'm looking forward to it.

◇ After class four of us went down and lunched on the grass at the banks of the canal, sketching, reading library books, Mili talking on the phone in Italian. Spring has arrived and brought the shirking violet Netherlands sun with her. Sometimes I feel so lucky just to be alive.

I Return!

◇ I was out from updating for a while because midterms hit, and I suddenly had a project, paper, and three major exams to do. Still! That's all done with for now.

◇ Busy social calendar coming up! Museum and board games with friends tomorrow! And then Sunday I have a student club trip to amsterdam, community garden volunteer day, and craft guild which I definitely cannot do all three at once so I need to make a decision there. Amsterdam sounds fun but also like money, so I think maybe craft guild. Then monday night, birdhouse making with Anouk's crew, tuesday at 17:30 I'm GMing Songbirds 3e, Wednesday my floor in the dorms is doing a dinner. So I'm... somewhat! Booked solid! Feels nice but also like damn I maybe should schedule in a break at some point.

◇ Which is also to say, I don't feel bad about doing basically nothing today.

◇ Basically nothing does include naming the discord manga reading club I'm doing, though! We're calling it Luck of the Draw. Which is a joke from, of course, draw as in the illustrations in the manga. But more than that, the format of it is stolen from Random Horror Podcast #9, which is a podcast by two of the Welcome to Nightvale guys. Each week they roll two dice, one for style and one for scare, think of movies that fit the bill, watch one, and then that's the next week's film.

For manga rather than scare, I'm doing Style and Substance. Style can be things like art style, decade, demographic. Substance refers to plots, tropes, and genre.

For the first week, the roll was Shounen for style and Set in Toyko for substance. The current nominees are:
◇Chainsaw Man
◇Yumekui Kenbun
◇Akira
◇Great Teacher Onizuka
◇Psychometer Eiji
Voting hasn't occured yet, but I'm putting the poll up in about a half hour. I'll see if there's anymore nominations before then. But I'm quite happy about it, and I'm glad people were interested.

When will I stop belonging to this hungry thing inside me?

R-18. Non-Con.
After Tanabata, Eichi thinks a lot about Itsuki Shu. Trickstar is performing in the Summer Live, so fine gets to sit back and spectate, which leaves Eichi's thoughts to wander as he sits in the student council room, empty of anyone save him on his throne. Eichi absently checks the clock, and then his phonebook.

The thing about Itsuki Shu is this: he is only human. He can be killed with the flick of a circuit breaker hooked to a sound system, his unit chopped up, and the remains buried underground in the casket of a live-house. But even then. His corpse rose up and sang, the sound awful and more wonderful than anything Eichi has ever heard his whole life over, even after all the operas and symphonies he was made to sit through in his childhood. He hears it still, weeks after Tanabata— ta-ta-tan— the syncopated fall of Shu's footsteps to fine's own Tryst of Stars, remade darkly in Valkyrie's image.

What choice does he have but to kill him again? )

TTRPG CHARACTER 6: Barachois Dauguet

BASIC INFO

NAME:Barachois Dauguet
GAME: High Magic Lowlives
GENERAL DEAL: Private Third Eye
GENDER: Male

STATS

HP: 8
MP: 2
Inventory slots: 12

DICE

Hit: d6
Magic: d4
Martial: d8
Phone battery: d8
#brand: 0

LOOK

Poet. Dark turtleneck. Dark beret.

VIBE

Unwashed, sleepless mania.

ALIGNMENT

Medium Nerd, Lightly Goth

BARACHOIS
Live-streamer, Unwilling Detective, Failed Marine Biologist

BACKGROUND
High Magic Low Lives is a game about playing social media influencer criminals who livestream their wizard crimes against the immortal aristocracy to build their #brand. The game copy says it's about wizard school drop-outs, but not all the classes are wizard school drop-outs.

Barachois, for instance, got his wizard degree. Magic domain: shellfish. He picked it because the classes worked with his work schedule, he liked the university location, and it had nothing to do with divination or horrors and he wanted to invest his actual effort into literature and organising open mic nights for poetry. Or comedy, if the people insisted. He wasn't out to make enemies, he was out to provide a voice to the mic.

Anyway, unfortunately, psychic visions didn't really give a shit about what he wanted his magic to do or not. So he has a degree in shellfish magic and a tendency for horrible migraine assaults from the future if he goes to sleep without taking precautions. Aside from his poor mental barriers against timelines yet to come, he also has poor mental barriers against the femme/homme fatale, who seem to have a homing instinct for his visions, and come bearing bad news and worse paychecks. He keeps telling himself that this is the last one, then he's out and back to trying to get a job as a very specific kind of marine biologist.

But now he's fallen in with a certain crowd. Gotten a rep. He didn't try and build the brand, so now he's branded with an image he didn't build or get pick. He has the near-empty video page, and a slowly climbing follower counter. Help.

ABILITIES
Prophetic Visions: When you sleep without wearing any protection you learn a secret about the world that you couldn’t possibly have learned on your own. It may not be useful, but it will definitely be true.
Inventory
2 Half tuna sandwich (Δ4)
Bedroll (d4)
Rope (Δ6)
Sun hat (d6)
Blue Potion & Tequila Δ6
Disposable Phone Battery Δ8
A length of pipe (d6)
A spider in a glass orb, perfectly content and healthy (d6)

EDITORIAL
I think the concept of this game is interesting and fun. Like, the d66 tables for dating profile! The goth/prep, nerd/jock alignment chart! The ridiculous magic domains! But I don't think the mechanics as presented jive super well with the game as presented. It seems like it ought to be either more story-centric and thus less dice heavy but we have a bunch of different types of dice to keep track of. Or, if you did it the other way, and just had a romp with ridiculous backstory but the fun was supposed to be the encounters, it doesn't provide enough mechanical information to really feel like that's what it was trying to do, either. A weird midpoint of a game. Still, I'm happy with the character I made for it. Here's his misc information because I didn't really feel like they deserved their own section on the character sheet:

Connection: Member of a secret death cult known as The Obsidian Eye (Δ6)
Blood type: B positive
Seeking a: Wilderness Prep for a Ritual Partnership
Music preference: Crystal Fuzz
Criminal record: Media piracy

Enstars Daily Ship Polls Continued

More notes from the discord randomized ship polls and opinions thereupon:

Kagehira Mika/Mashiro Tomoya: A victim of Human Comedy/Valkyra*bits repayment fes being the last story before they knew they were doing a sequel. As such, Mika and Tomoya are set up for a rivalry with no pay off, with them as prospective future leaders of their units within Yumenosaki. That said! I still like them as a what could have been, had the sequel gone more linearly from the endpoint of the original. Tomoya wanting to make Mika admit defeat while Mika is utterly confident in Valkyrie was terrible as an endpoint but would have been a good starting point.

Fushimi Yuzuru/Saegusa Ibara: A unanimous yay vote in chat. Also a victim of the sequel not being great for cross-unit sequel CR, but their set-up is extremely good regardless in sharp contrast to the what could have been of the previous pairing. We love child soldiers in my discord.

Tenshouin Eichi/Hasumi Keito: Two extremely mainstream pairings rolled in a row. A good ship but I don't have a ton to say about it. This was another unanimous yay but no one really discussed it much.

Godfather/Ran Nagisa: Full disclosure, this was actually rolled as Ran Nagisa/Sagami Jin. In the cases of rolls that are with staff that the idol in question has no CR with, I swap them out for an NPC that is relevant to their story. This one most the chat was negative or ambivalent on for reasons of: not being entirely caught up on the gay dead old men drama, which seems like it is relevant to properly understanding the characterisation of the Godfather, or Nagisa was basically a non-person at the time of his death which makes the ship very static. I, personally, voted Hmm. For reasons of, to quote a friend in chat who put it much better than me: for the 1970s Nagisa's tragic bl uke backstory, with his psychosexually unwell upbringing at the hands of an equally tragic and pining homosexual father figure.

Tsukinaga Leo/Oukawa Kohaku: They've met onscreen but they're largely connected through Mama and Tsukasa, but without the direct third-wheeling that you get with like, Makoto as an unspoken third to Sena Izumi/Aoi Yuuta. Madara is a poor love triangle vector. Nay.

Amagi Rinne/Amagi Hiiro: Chat was split and they're definitely somewhat popular in fanart, but Amagicest isn't my cup of tea. They're fine but I don't think they're each other's most interesting options. Nay again.

Kagehira Mika/Niito Nazuna: Two people who totally didn't understand each other at all and projected their own wants onto the other: the valkyrie story. I think there's a lot of good things here but it's all worked out, and was largely worked on screen. Which is to say I think canon did a great job with them! But this leaves my feelings as... hm, when your ship is canon so you have no interest in fanfic of it? Except they're not an endgame ship, but I've still had what I would hypothetically want out of them. A yay in theory, but not a hard yay. I am satisfied with them.

Tsukinaga Leo/GFK: This was another swapout of a staff character Leo doesn't have CR with for GFK.
For me, with GFK... while he is influential on the plot before he got murdered and even after he got murdered, there's not really enough onscreen to really understand him as a person. We get enough for some of the enstars NPCs! Like Touri's sister, Mama's sister, Bishoujo-senpai, etc. But I wouldn't consider GFK to be one of them. But . . . I also think the dynamic is interesting. I think someone would have to do some good wholesale cloth work at which point GFK is basically an OC, but I could be sold on it. This is a solid Hmm.

Anzu/Hidaka Hokuto: Near unanimous Yay vote. Anzu should get to date the dumbest man alive. I have a very soft spot for Trickstar, as well.

Hidaka Seiya/Hibiki Wataru: This is today's spin result! Despite the fact they don't have any direct CR, I actually struggle to think if they've met onscreen, this is a solid yay for me. Wataru is noted to be super similar to his wife, and both men love and idolise his Ms. Hidaka. I wish you were my wife --> I also wish I was your wife is a dynamic that is really hypothetically funny. My friends also have pointed out that adding Hokuto into this mix makes a solidly funny pairing hypoxically funny. Unable to breathe suffocating from laughter levels. Unanimous yay votes so far purely for sending Hokuto to space and/or a frothing rage.

Sunday: The Weekend in Review

◇ Faewish sprites are photobombing bastards and I love them for it. It's great. Infinity Nikki has many delights.

◇ Last night was Kat's birthday! And a vegan potluck. I was going to cook, bought ingredients and then got struck with a headache, chewed three paracetamol and picked up fruit on the way over instead. It worked out fine! But now I should cook the stuff for myself. Maybe on Tuesday after class.

◇ Jonah was the most fantastically overdressed to the party. Apparently his girlfriend dressed him, so I guess she has fantastic taste. Frilly white blouse and a very fancy paisley waistcoat.

◇ Volunteered at the community garden today! It was more people than usually show up, so that was great.

◇ THE BANK ACCOUNT CATCH-22 DEBACLE WILL MAYBE BE SOLVED SOON.

to explain: to open a bank account in the Netherlands, you need a phone number. If you try and get a cellphone number, you must have a Dutch bank account. It has been driving me insane for months as I have had neither. But I showed up in person to try and make one and they tried to shove me towards online but online they. Well. You need a phone number and they try to verify it. And I don't get a message because I don't have a phone number. So they were like mmmm if you realllllly wanna do it in person. We'll make an appointment. And I'll just give them my defunct number and change it once I have a new phone number. This is stupid but at least it should be nearly over.

TTRPG CHARACTER 5: Pearl Driscoll

BASIC INFO

NAME:Pearl Driscoll
GAME: Monster of the Week
PLAYBOOK: The Hex
Gender: Female

STATS

CHARM: +1
COOL: -1
SHARP: +1
TOUGH: 0
WEIRD: +2

LOOK

Trendy clothes

EYES

Sharp eyes.

TEMPTATION

Secrets. Use magic to discover forbidden, dangerous knowledge.
Pearl
Lapidarist, Rich Bitch, Bad Luck Charm

BACKGROUND
Monster of the Week is what it says on the tin, so it functions as Buffy the Vampire Hunter: the Game. Or Supernatural: the Game. Or X-Files: the Game. Between them all, Pearl is definitely more from a Buffy background, than a hunter who grew up in this business. A popular girl, though never the queen bee, she was in with that crowd. After all, her parents are jewelers. She might be a metal shop girlie at heart, but on the surface level she has the money and the access to glitz to buy her access to the good social circles. Her burn scars are under gloves, anyway, so they're basically not even there.

But while other people can ignore what's not on the surface, she's... bad at that. And that's why she got tangled up in this supernatural shit, and now that she is what is she supposed to do? Just ignore the constant threats hanging around her house and the school and ruining her nightlife and also maybe her regular life? She's not chosen, she doesn't have an inherited gift, she's not part ghoulie or beastie. She's just dead if she decides to stop using the little bit of strength she's found a way to give herself.

And because that's in her head, she'll ignore danger to find out more about secret, dangerous, and forbidden magic. If she's dead either way, she might as well take the risk that might show her a way to make things better. Or at least, make things go her way. Things do usually go her way, though not necessarily to the way of people around her. Pearl's magic, when it goes awry, doesn't go for her as long as there's someone else around to hit. Allies, bystanders, and sometimes maybe even an enemy.

Gear
Ritual components: Bag of unpolished, raw gems & semiprecious stones. Used for her rote.

Ritual components: Object of power. Ring. "Found" in a gorgon den. Stolen. Used for her rote.

Wizardly weapon: Athame (2-harm hand magic silver)

Wizardly weapon: .38 revolver (2-harm close reload loud)

MOVES
Bad Luck Charm: Whenever you use magic and miss, the backlash never affects you directly if there’s someone else around to hit. It’ll go for allies, other hunters, and innocent bystanders. Sometimes, every so often, it might even hit an enemy.

Burn Everything: When you use magic to inflict harm, you can choose to inflict 3-harm area magic obvious or 3-harm ignore-armour magic obvious.

This Might Sting: You can use magic to heal 3-harm, but the process is exceptionally painful. On a 7-9 it also leaves a gnarly scar.

ROTES
Girl's Best Friend:
Requires: An expendable component such as sulfur, sage, or incense, which must be burned, blown, or scattered during the casting. (Stone/glass/gem, shattered) | An object of power (wand, talisman, orb, staff, etc) which must be wielded (ring)

Effect: Something is replaced with the material of her shattering.

10+: It works exactly as she planned. The blanket is now a diamond shield. The door is glass, and can be shattered. The plastic toy sword is now sharp steel. The wolfman's leg is now stone.

7-9: It works, but the area of effect is wrong or there is another complication. Perhaps she only meant to affect the zipper so someone couldn't break into a bag. The whole bag is now stone— what's inside is safe now, but hard to access. Maybe the whole wall is glass, instead of the door, and the cultists inside can see you and are forewarned. Etc. The wolfman has heavy stone claws and fur slowing it down, but it is still coming.

Miss It goes awry. Something unhelpful is effected. The lightbulb turns to jade and shatters on the floor, plunging the room into pitch black. A gun turns to soft gold and firing a bullet deforms it. The wolfman has diamond tipped claws.

EDITORIAL
Character number 5! Monster of the Week feels like a good follow-up to Monsterhearts 2, since they use very similar systems. I've played Monster of the Week before though, and have another character for it, but I decided to make a new one just for fun! My other character uses the Divine playbook, and is a very shitty angel who is trying his best who makes primarily bad decisions.

So I went into making a new character with the Bad Decisions as her primary trait! Pearl is not a good girl and she really isn't trying to be. I support women's wrongs. Not that her core wants are bad or anything, but her playbook is definitely geared towards like, Willow in peak bad decision season of Buffy. It's been a while, I forget which one that was. Season 6? The core concept of the playbook is like, uses magic regardless of the detriment it causes to others around them, because this girl was thrown into the middle of supernatural bullshit and decided to latch onto magic because they feel they don't have another option.

Her playbook is not one of the starter playbook options, and can be found here.

As an aside, she's also named after Clara Driscoll.

Thursday Tidings

◇ I'm not a mascot person but the faewish sprites in Infinity Nikki are great. They do have somewhat simplistic personalities but I really appreciate that they have a fully developed society. Also almost every single sprite you meet is such a fucked up little guy doing their best who sucks so much. I love that. Here's some individual faesprite highlights:
List of Faewish Sprites I like )
◇ Got my application to the Honours college in on time! A few days before due date, even!

◇ Went out to lunch with some friends and made plans to go hiking with two of them in August if we're all in the country. This place! Purple heather fields, it looks fucking gorgeous. I'm looking forward to it!

◇ On my little enstars discord server with friends we've been doing a ship of the day poll where I randomize a ship and we do yay/nay/hmm about it. It's also ended up being an excuse for rarepair discussions so I'm gonna copy/paste/summarize some ship discussions and my opinions on them.

TTRPG CHARACTER 4: MAJORIE "JURY" DAW

BASIC INFO

NAME:Marjorie "Jury" Daw
GAME: Monsterhearts 2
SKIN: The Unseen
SEX: AFAB

STATS

HOT: -1
COLD: 2
VOLATILE: 1
DARK: -1

LOOK

Peering through bangs

EYES

Translucent eyes.

ORIGIN

Someone else's problem

JURY
Witness, Loner, Extortionist

BACKGROUND
Monsterhearts 2 is a game of literal metaphor: in which that kid is literally a vampire, but they're also a drain on everyone around them, who uses charm to bypass other people's boundaries and get what they want. High school is messy and terrifying, and the secret monster double lives everyone is leading only amps that up.

Jury is "the unseen", a monster that is perfectly transparent, unseen even by cameras. The cause isn't even something of their own doing— the bystander to an event with more overt consequences for others, Jury was already a cold outsider so no one even realised Jury's change. Resentful at others for their own lonliness, Jury has not been using their newfound invisibility for good. No, it's blackmailing time. Without a social circle, Jury is making good friends with untouchability and being totally unaccountable, out less for money and more for torment.

There's also another side to Jury's plight.

The reason Jury didn't get to close to anyone to begin with, and another reason this condition is both a torment and a blessing. Puberty was a betrayal, and being perceived as female and having others treat them that way is hard. It's easier to just be apart from everyone, if they can't be who they actually are. Who Jury is— who he is inside his head— isn't percieved by anyone. They don't see him. They just see the body he wears, and now they don't even see that. He now has to do make-up to make his skin visible, foundation and blush to try and mimic actual skin, a wig atop invisible hair, and his clothes hang off a hated feminine frame.

His choices are thus: put effort into being perceived as a false self, or shed the disguise and not be perceived at all— there's freedom in separating himself from how others perceive him, but it's very lonely. He resents having this choice: deep down, he'd like not to be lonely, but not enough to give up on who he is.

ABILITIES
See right through you: You are perfectly transparent. Nothing including cameras can see you. This only affects your body, not anything you wear or carry. You can still be sensed by anything but sight. Interacting with others normally may involve wearing bandages, full covered clothing, or a mask. If your disguised and your nature is exposed roll Cold. On a hit, you can retain self-control and make a hasty escape. On a 7-9, you are enraged and embarrassed. All onlookers get a string on you.

Blackmailer: When you spy on someone in a private moment, take a string. When you a spend a string to offer experience, keep the string if they refuse.

EDITORIAL
Character number 4! Since Monsterhearts 2 is a very textually queer game, I wanted to make a character that spoke to my experience being a queer teenager. There was a lot less trans awareness I feel when I was in high school. That said, while Jury ended up stepping out of the social sphere entirely, I ended up volunteering at an LGBT center downtown. I think there's enough common ground though that he'd be an interesting character to play.

His playbook is an unofficial one, rather than one of the starter ones. You can find the supplement it's from here.

Saturday Morning Scraps

◇ I am seriously considering making a fanmix community on Dreamwidth. I've got two friends who expressed interest, which is definitely not nothing! And the username fanmixed is untaken. Fanmix is taken though, and the comm is inactive. Which means. . . it's currently an untaken niche! I want to have two fanmixes ready in the wings to post when I make the comm though, and to come up with a few monthly theme challenges so I'm ready to keep it a bit active to start. So that's on the to-do list now!

I have conquered a terrible word problem.

And by conquered, I mean I dumped the data at someone else's feet and told them to please get the data I needed from it. But the good news is, I have the figures needed for my report on Athen's sociometabolic status quo.

The question, for the curious, was: How do I estimate the tonnes of oil used by Athens. The figures: Greece uses 5.82 million tonnes of oil in transportation, with 5 million tonnes of that used by vehicles on the road. Greece has a motorisation rate of 600 cars per 1000 people in the country overall and 800 cars per 1000 people in Athens. The overall population of Greece is 10 million, and it's 3.6 million people in Athens.

It's been estimated now at 2.4 million tonnes of oil for transportation by vehicles. Hopefully that's close enough.

◇ You know considering the Dutch exist, we really give Brits too hard a time about their food. At least the British know their food is terrible? And they've adopted curry about it. They were like you guys are right, let's eat some of your food, it's better. They also have fish and chips and a few other decent things in there.

The Dutch, however, do not learn.

They're bad at bread. Like at least in California I could get sourdough, right? And baguettes were common. In the Netherlands it is legitimately difficult to find good bread, and most all the shit in their stores is American style puffed up library paste stabaliser and sawdust white bread. How are you guys like this when you're Germanic. Aren't the Germans crazy about bread. Do you take pride in being worse than the Germans? What's going on here. How is your food this bad.

I do not care about food. That is awful enough to complain about really says something.

◇ I finally finished writing and posted When will I stop belonging to this hungry thing inside me? I'll cross-post it soon! I should maybe make a small masterpost for fics. I don't have a lot of them, but it might be nice to have. This is lower priority than getting the fanmix comm stuff done tho.

TTRPG CHARACTER 3:

BASIC INFO

NAME: Felix Luhrmann
GAME: Don't Rest Your Head
GENDER: Flunking masculinity.

STATS

DISCIPLINE: 3
FIGHT: 0
FLIGHT: 3
SCARS: 0

FELIX LUHRMANN
GRAPHIC DESIGNER, COWARD, ANIME OBSESSIVE

BACKGROUND
Felix didn't come to the city of madness because he was running— he already had an escape. It was a few too many nights of all-nighters with commission work, with staying up and sniping merch sales off yahoo auctions. One night he loses a bidding war— not even to the guy he was bidding against, a last minute sniper— on a rare figurine. He looks about his prized collection, consoling himself, and puts on a jacket and takes the elevator down to see if he can scrounge up a can of something caffeinated from the all night convenience store to get back to work with, only for the elevator to stop at a floor that doesn't exist.

WHAT'S BEEN KEEPING YOU AWAKE?
Desire. Staying awake to bid at the right time to win specific rare figurines from the obscure object of his obsession. Staying awake to earn the money to bid.
WHAT JUST HAPPENED TO YOU?
Covered in Background. Even his walk of defeat didn't turn out right.
WHAT'S ON THE SURFACE?
Gangly, unwashed, anime t-shirt, motorcycle jacket, skinny jeans, aviator glasses with transition lenses. Visibly distracted by his phone at all times.

WHAT LIES BENEATH?
High self-esteem (in his graphic design skills, making money and not needing to depend on anyone), low self-esteem (he needs to not depend on anyone because anyone meeting him won't like him. There is nothing good about him except the things he is good at. He will make you a website and you will not see his face nor room even once, nothing outside of emails and portfolio work.) Escapism and collecting objects that help him immerse in fantasy so as to not face the reality of his discontent. In his experience, acting on his discontent does nothing good. Getting kicked out of the house was not good, even if it's the best thing that ever happened to him.

WHAT'S YOUR PATH?
Stated: Independence. Anime figurines. In the immediate, he wants to use his access to the nightmare world that most people can't see to get cool things to keep at home.
Real, but unlikely: human connection. In the long term, he might come to see that he doesn't want to be an automaton of the city, just taking on a role, collecting and storing, possibly selling just because that will keep him safe. The harder path to becoming a real person might become clear.

ABILITIES
EXHAUSTION TALENT:
Visual analysis. He can do the party trick of flipping through a book and then tell you what pages the headers were on, despite not having seen it before. Maps seen in passing can be recalled and followed, a quick visual sweep of very messy room will let him find what he's looking for.
MADNESS TALENT:
Can draw things into reality. Draws a cute anime girl with a gun to be a distraction? There is now a cute anime girl with a gun to be a distraction. Need a rope? He can draw a rope.

EDITORIAL
Character number 3 on the list. Don't Rest Your Head is a really edgelord mid-aughts game, and I wanted to create a character that fit into that time. I waffled a bit on the phone, but honestly I'm sure he had one of those early... not flip phones. Like the slider types, like a Motorola Droid or a Nokia E7. He might even have an early Japanese phone, since he's super an otaku, with the Galápagos syndrome Japanese phones benefited from, they were generally more capable than western phones of the same time.

What else. Oh! Gender is listed that way as a joke that's also not a joke. It's late 2000s so the discourse isn't there yet, but he's not female but also feels like he has failed out of the masculinity milestones and also doesn't even know if he wants to hit them? In modern times he'd probably use he/they pronouns and be somewhere on the genderqueer spectrum, but instead all he has is a discomfited feeling.

This game doesn't have a lot of stats, and instead has five major questions you answer when creating the character.

Thoughts on Tigana

FINISHED READING. Or "reading". I borrowed this one as an audiobook from the Seattle Public Library! Which means there might be some portions I missed a bit of, since I heard it while cycling and sometimes city noise might have distracted me a bit, and I didn't go back and do any close reading. Still, here's my thoughts on it!

I picked up Tigana, because I wanted to read something by Guy Gavriel Kay— he's known for his historically-based fantasy settings and being good at doing interesting fantasy politics/power-jockeying. Tigana has won an award and seemed fairly well regarded, and the library had it so I decided that sure, why not! Time to read Tigana. Time for some pseudo-Venice!

Unfortunately, it's definitely a work that has aged extremely poorly.

The primary, though far from only, culprit is Devin di Tigana. The narrative focuses on an ensemble cast, but one of our first narrators is Devin and he is a fairly consistent thread throughout the novel, though other characters come and go from the narrative. And, despite the fact that this is a novel that is primarily concerned with empire and memory, and of a people whose identity has been stolen from them by empire, we get. . . a dude that is clearly there to get to have a romantic adventure novel experience and be there for readers to self-insert into. So, that's pretty tonally jarring.

Second, this is a novel where one of the themes it wants to explore— according to the author, in the afterword included on the audiobook— is deviant sexuality in the people that have lost their footing in the world— something that should be meaningful has become corrupted. In some instances, this works really well— Dianora and her brother's relationship. In some instances, it's pretty cringe and aged poorly: see, duke's gay son, the empress and her lesbian lover. Great that we include these gay characters just so we can include them as part of this theme and then kill them off. This was published in 1990, so if it was just bad at the LGBT I'd forgive it, though. But.

Devin. In Devin's case, this theme gets to be weirdly lumped into wish-fulfillment for the male reader where Catriana fucks Devin so he doesn't pay attention to the plotting happening behind his back— and then he gets included in the plot anyway, and he got to have sex with a pretty girl! So while for Catriana we get to see it feeding into the theme of sex being rendered no longer a thing of meaningful connection, as she uses it as a tool, for Devin we get... wish-fulfillment. He later gets to also have kinky sex with a priestess and the empty debauchery again feeds into the theme, but it's also like. Trite. Tiresome. There is sex in this book that works and none of the Devin scenes do.

He's also introduced being a sexist prick and then Catriana has to apologise to him for it which is also like, unfortunate.

That said, Diagnora is a great character and she does carry the book. I feel like it would have just been a much better novel from her perspective, especially since her scenes get a lot of the court politics and inner workings of the empire. Sympathetic and in an impossible position, excellent pathos, the flashback scenes give her motivation excellently, her relationship with Brandin and her brother are both convincing, her maneuvering within the court and her maneuvering to get there were all fantastic. I do feel like most the ensemble was pulling their weight, Devin aside, though.

Day 7 of the Snowflake Challenge

I decided to finish the Snowflake challenge, even though January is over! I started late, so I'll finish late but I will finish!

Challenge #7
In your own space, create a list of at least three things you'd love to receive, something you've wanted but were afraid to ask for - a wishlist of sorts.
All right! Wishlist. . . I tried to think of some things that pretty much anyone could do, a fandom thing, and a selfish about me thing!

1. Show me COOL ARCHITECTURE and CITIES.
I love cities! I'm an urbanite through and through, I love living around people in cultural centres, where there's always things to do! And I am a steadfast appreciator of things humans make. That means arts of all sorts but it also means architecture and infrastructure! If you share my appreciation even a little bit, please share with me your favourite buildings, bridges, public squares, or even a whole city!
2. Please share your favourite artists!
High art, low art, fanart, installation art you saw in a museum one time. . . Anything goes!
3. Please go leave a comment on a fic you enjoy!
Spread some fandom positivity, go and let someone know that you thought their fic was a fun read! or whatever else you have to say about it!
4. Selfishness time: fanfic feedback!
If we share a fandom and you're maybe interested in giving something a read, please give me some feedback! I don't really care if it's positive or not, too. Well, as long as you're not flaming. But I like concrit or even just, hey I gave this a read and this writing style isn't my thing or the writing was good but I don't enjoy this kind of content is all valuable to me. I tend to write niche things in less popular fandoms, so I don't get a lot of feedback at all, and it'd be nice to know if there's anything I have to improve on or if it's not an issue of my writing and simply like: the writing is fine, but it's not to your taste! Being able to put to rest the idea of like, oh, I must have executed this badly vs knowing nah the execution was fine but it's just not something other people want to read honestly makes me feel better. Art is always subjective, after all! Hearing someone didn't like it for x reasons but when x was exactly what you were going for is its own kind of satisfaction too, if that makes sense!

It feels like since a lot of the comment culture these days is very positivity focused, it's hard to get feedback. I've had betas before and told them upfront I'd rather have commentary that focuses on the flow of the work and instead just got back edits about comma placement and it's always like. . . a bit, oh, I wasn't clear in what kind of feedback I was looking for, I guess. You can give feedback here in this post too, instead of on ao3 if leaving it in the comments there feels less conversational and more intimidating.
