Day 2 of the Snowflake Challenge
Jan. 25th, 2025 06:39 pmThe prompt for today is your fandom origin story.
Mine's nothing too special, I think! When I was about in middle school, the YGO DM manga was still coming out, it was the ancient Egypt arc and I would check forums for... it wasn't even scanslations. It was raws with very quick dirty summaries or scripts of varying qualities. And those same forums also had fanfic! And from there, some were cross-posted on FF.net. I also began my bad habit of reading fic for fandoms I hadn't seen before if I liked the author enough! Which I think was maybe common, in those days, judging by the way fanon proliferated and largely replaced canon in a lot of fanfic works.
I didn't write or roleplay for fandom though, even if I read stuff. I began roleplaying in multifandom spaces when I was 18 or 19, with my first game I participated being Sabra la Tau on insanejournal! And I've stuck around roleplaying and moderating games every so often ever since, sometimes writing fic too. I'm maybe not the most active participant, but I've been here a long time. I talk about it a lot with friends, though! Long walks on the beach debating the finer points of characterization of card game anime characters is a thing I have done before, but not something I can really point to in terms of fandom participation.
I will say that I've always been a darkfic liker, and I enjoy to roleplay conflict over fluff! Goth bastard, reporting in? I'm honestly not sure I've changed too much from my younger days. Out of curiosity I once looked at my fanfiction account from my middle school days, and the person I was dating at the time laughed with me about how much the author notes sound like how I still speak. Oh, tiny Tristan. You were the most pretentious of all children.
